Etching in marble is an old technique that originated in East Europe. Artwork of this kind is weather resistant and that is why it was used for gravestone portraits in the past, but nowadays is almost obsolete due to the technology progress and cultural evolution. Contrast created by etching on black polished marble results in unique light reflection that appears slightly different based on the light source and viewing angle. It involves free hand etching with diamond tip pen over polished black marble surface. Each etch appears like a miniature scratch on marble. It takes time and patience to complete art pieces as it requires etching of many layers, with different textures and patterns. Once that part is complete, etched surface is filled with gold or silver dust.
